I have wanted to write a pre-release blog on the new Disney movie, “Into the Woods,” for weeks now. I finally sat down to do it. I was browsing through my news feed on Facebook and say that Disney had a longer preview video posted on YouTube. This preview had actors and directors commentary of the film. The vid added more light onto, what has been, a very intriguing, yet non-informative story line so far.
I am not saying that the new preview added any more information to what the plot line of the film is but it at least gave a moral to the film. In the preview, actor Emily Blunt, stated that the lesson to be learned from the film is, and I paraphrase, “Be careful what you wish for,” and focus on what you have in front of you.
Well, to start off on what we know of the film thus far. “Into the Woods” is directed by Rob Marshall and he is joined by an all-star cast which includes, Emily Blunt, Jonny Depp, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine and Meryl Streep. The film combines several well-known fairy tails, such as, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel and puts a modern spin on them.
This “modern spin” appears to be a new trend by the filmmakers at Disney. They were, in my opinion, successful in that endeavor in “Maleficent” that was in theaters earlier this year.
Another recent trend that Disney has employed is releasing previews that just barely give you enough of a storyline to make you want to go out and watch the film. I have to admit that as much as I liked “Frozen,” I did not have any desire to see it. The previews had nothing to do with the actual storyline nor did it spark any intrigue in me to find out for myself. “Maleficent” was the same way but gave a bit more story and had Angelina Jolie as the lead.
Oh, did I mention this is a musical? Well, it is, and I bet Disney is hoping it’s recent musical success from “Frozen” continues with this film. I, myself, have never been a fan of live action musicals, although I enjoyed the underrated musical, “Enchanted.” The clips of songs shown in the recent preview release did nothing for me.
With that said, I will still go and watch the film in the theaters when after it is released on December 25th. Why, well, it’s a Disney film, and I am a well documented fanatic. I am counting on the fact that Disney is back on a roll of producing great films, and this one won’t disappoint.
